Let’s get caught up on a few odds and ends.
- The Rays lost Tyler Goeddel in the Rule 5 Draft as he was taken with the first pick by the Philadelphia Phillies. Goeddel, who was a first-round pick in the 2011 draft, is a third baseman-turned-outfielder who has a solid all-around game, hitting .279 with a .350 OBP in double-A this past season with 39 extra-base hits and 28 stolen bases. Unfortunately there just wasn’t enough room on the 40-man roster. The Rays had a ton of early draft picks in the 2011 draft and this was the year that most of those players needed to be added to the 40-man to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft and there were only so many spots.
- The Rays also lost prospect Joey Rickard and two players in the minor league portion of the draft. [TampaBay.com]
- Baseball America has released their list of the Top 10 Rays prospects with Blake Snell on top, followed by Willy Adames and Brent Honeywell. [Baseball America]
- No surprise here, but Asdrubal Cabrera is now officially not coming back to the Rays, agreeing to a 2-year, $18.5 million deal with the New York Mets. [Jim Duquette]
